Liam Lawson is one of the most promising motorsport talents from New Zealand. The 17-year-old won the domestic Toyota Racing Series this winter and was also inducted into the Red Bull junior team. He is now preparing for his first season in the Formula European Masters, which he will race at the wheel of a vehicle with Team Motopark.
Why did you choose Formula European Masters for 2019?
“I chose Formula European Masters for 2019 as I absolutely love driving the car. I tested prior to Christmas: the speed you can carry through the corners is unbelievable and like nothing else I have ever driven. I feel the Formula European Masters will prepare me well for whatever comes next. I am really looking forward to getting started and racing alongside the DTM which is high profile and always attracts huge crowds.”
Why have you decided to race for Team Motopark?
“Aside from Red Bull having a long and successful relationship with Motopark it is clear they have demonstrated they are a consistent front runner in the championship, most recently with Dan Ticktum finishing second overall. They have a high level of experience in the championship and I am hoping to learn a lot from them over the season. I have already had several message exchanges with team principal Timo Rumpfkeil. All in all I feel very comfortable with the decision.”
How important is the support of Red Bull for you?
“It’s massive. To be part of the Red Bull Junior Academy is something I have dreamed about since I was a little kid in karts. The academy is proven to be successful and has brought many young drivers to Formula 1. I now have the opportunity to learn from one of the most successful Formula 1 teams and access to things I have not in the past. I live in New Zealand which is pretty much about as far away from Europe as you can get so when I head up for the pre-season testing I am hoping to go and visit Red Bull headquarters in Austria along with the factory in the UK.”
Thank you, Liam.
